English abstract: thanks to the donations of over 370 enthusiasts, the restored color film shot from Apollo 11's lunar module during the minutes leading up to the landing is now available in full, in high definition and with synchronized sound in the short film “Contact Light”. This footage is also synchronized with the film shot in Mission Control, also restored to full clarity and with synchronized sound.  To the best of my knowledge, this is the first film to show Mission Control footage with synced sound.  Below you can watch an early preview of this ongoing project. Further donations will allow to expand the project with additional footage and audio. The examination process will be Applied to Apollo 11's moonwalk footage in a forthcoming full-length documentary Called "Moonscape", two by 20 July 2011.

donors who have contributed so far to the project Moonscape can finally see the first fruits of their participation: the preliminary version of Contact Light , the prequel of Moonscape .

Contact Light is, to my knowledge, the first documentary to show the world in high definition not only the whole shooting of the camera aboard the lunar module of Apollo 11, which filmed in color throughout the descent to the Moon to the historic first moon landing, but also shooting the men in the control center in Houston, synchronized sound track than that video of the moon.

So far, the filming of Mission Control were always shown without sound and without context, because no cameras were made by sound and no one knew at that moment relates; existed audio communications sent from Houston, but none had been able to match the images with the corresponding sound. He made it with a truly impressive work of research, Britain's Stephen Slater, as described by the Guardian in July this year.


Now, for example, we may finally see the moment when the flight director Gene Kranz asked his engineers the fateful "Go" for the moon landing and communicated the result to Charlie Duke, who we can see while in turn transmits to Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin the "Go" them will make history. One hundred works in oils on canvas and Vahedi Hassan linografie Leyla Vahedi will be exhibited at the large local studies of Italian film.
Point starting the work of Hassan Vahedi is the current social and political life. Military conflicts, social tensions, injustice set in motion the production of this working class of color, through the stern gaze of his exile, at home everywhere.
The icons and fetishes of the media have inspired new paintings by Hassan, shown in this exhibition. The images from television, newspapers, magazines are re-contextualized, rescheduled, and reassembled in an area of \u200b\u200bgreat-looking and highly topical forms, through a point of abstraction. The colors are strong, violent and determined, as its palette of this artist in continuous innovation.
The prints of linografie Leyla Vahedi witness the stages of a course of study and research began in 2007. I finished and cleaned up the trailer Moonscape changing several elements: the titles are smaller (I did a trial in lower case, for those who asked me, but it is not effective), the text is slightly amended to clarify the purpose of the documentary and I added the links to supporting information. What

More importantly, I entered the first of the panoramic moon (the final version will be more fluid) and a direct comparison between the original television and its restoration. I changed some shots to show the best time of shooting of the famous photo of the impression and now in the length of a gem can be seen live on TV in more: Buzz Aldrin's face in one of the rare moments when he lifted his visor reflective.

photos from AS11-40-5881 to 5891 taken by Buzz Aldrin form a panoramic view, a simple version of which, assembled by Dave Byrne 's Apollo Lunar Surface Journal ( source) is shown below.



These images can be digitally processed, taking into account the perspective deformation and variations in brightness, to get an overview of more uniform, like the one below, created by Fozzillo with color correction Andrea Tedeschi. The version presented here is a low resolution: the original size 20.000 x 5000 pixels.


This panorama covers 360 degrees and is a perfect candidate for a press that produces a cyclorama . It is particularly interesting because it shows both the shadow of the photographer (Buzz Aldrin) and one of the few pictures of Neil Armstrong during the lunar excursion, together with the camera, the flag, the experiment of collecting solar wind and the lunar module (all 'shadow of which is Armstrong).

The overview can be so elaborate then digitally animated to give depth and perspective, as if the viewer were in the place of the astronaut. Here is the result, also built by Fozzillo, resolution is lower than the HD that will be seen Moonscape .


This is only a preview demonstration: the final version presented in Moonscape is likely to be different and more complex.

Fozzillo Hugin used to compose images, initially hoping to get a calculated result automatically, but without success. The examination of other similar views from others and made available on the Internet (for example at the Apollo Lunar Surface Journal) showed that the images were deformed with a degree of freedom (or artistic license) to make them fit.

The photos were taken of the moon in uncomfortable conditions and the rotation performed by Buzz Aldrin is far from perfect, so the images can not fit in a purely numerical. Therefore Fozzillo has created a landscape with numeric precision for the part of the horizon, that being away is not affected by involuntary movements of the photographer. He then used Gimp to accommodate the lower portion of the images that Hugin had failed to align well and to correct colors of the areas of connection between the individual frames. After the passage in Gimp, performed a series of transformations in Hugin and GIMP which required time rendering long (to these decisions every step may take anche mezz'ora di elaborazione) per ottenere la texture da utilizzare per l'animazione 3D, realizzata con Blender a 20.000 x 20.000 pixel.

Welcome to the Moonscape

Moonscape is a free and freely downloadable high-definition documentary about the first Moon landing, funded and produced by space enthusiasts from all over the world.

It will show the full, unedited Apollo 11 landing and moonwalk, using only the original TV and film footage and the original photographs, rescanned and restored from the best available sources. Its expected release date is July 20, 2011, with early previews around Christmas 2010.

There's also a prequel to Moonscape , called Contact Light , which covers the actual landing, i.e., the descent of the Lunar Module to the surface of the Moon, and is almost finished. You can preview a rough cut of Contact Light here:


Moonscape will allow you to experience the Moon landing through the eyes of the astronauts. Photographs taken in sequence will be assembled into panoramic views; the TV and color film footage will be shown in sync with the radio communications and with the photos, allowing you to see rare and unusual details of the historic event from multiple viewpoints and with unprecedented clarity. Most documentaries during the past forty years have used footage whose quality was degraded by multiple analog transfers: Moonscape instead gets as close as possible to the sharpness and richness of the original images.

We're purchasing the amazing restored and retransferred 16mm footage of the moonwalk from Footagevault.com , the same source used by documentaries such as In The Shadow of the Moon . The photographs have been sourced from NASA's GAPE ( Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth , eol.jsc.nasa.gov ) with a resolution of 4400 x 4600 pixels. The complete restored TV broadcast will also be included. All the astronauts' communications will also be available in subtitles for clarity.

Differently from many other documentaries, Moonscape will not "cheat" by using footage taken out of context or from other space missions. Every picture and every sound will be true to the actual sequence of events, as documented by NASA's Apollo Lunar Surface Journal . The only special effects allowed will be image stabilization, color correction and digital processing to generate high-definition panoramic views from the photographs.

When Moonscape is completed, it will be freely available for download at no cost, with no copyright restrictions except those provided by its Creative Commons license: basically, you'll be free to copy it to any medium, so long as you give credit to the authors. Yes, this kind of distribution is legal.

Moonscape is a free documentary, but making it doesn't come cheap. We're all devoting our time to this project for free, but buying the HD digital transfers is a big expense (several thousand euros/dollars) but it allows us to have the rights to distribute the documentary for free. And then there's the video editing software and hardware. So if you feel like donating some money, no matter how little, to the Moonscape project, you're most welcome: click on the Paypal link on the left. The names/nicknames of all donors will be included in Moonscape 's end titles.

Moonscape FAQ

When will it be available? That depends a lot on when all the footage becomes available. NASA hasn't yet released the final and full restoration of the TV broadcast. Also, editing and subtitling are time-consuming, and we're all working on the project in our spare time. So be patient, but we hope to have a rough cut by December and a final cut for July 20, 2011, the 42nd anniversary of the first Moon landing.

Will it be available in my language? Moonscape is multilingual. The first version will be in English, followed by Italian and by other languages depending on whether we find people willing to translate the subtitles into those languages. If you can help, contact us at paolo.attivissimo@gmail.com .

What format will it use? The high-definition version will be downloadable as a .MKV file and as ISO image from the Internet, via Bittorrent and other peer-to-peer networks. It will also be available on DVD (as a standard DVD playable on any player and as a DVD-ROM) and in streaming via Youtube, Vimeo and similar files. A Blu-ray version is unlikely due to the cost of a DVD burner and of the media, but we're keeping all options open.

Will it be copy protected? Absolutely not. Our aim is to disseminate it as widely as possible.

I can't download a huge file, will it be distributed by mail? No, Sorry. We have no time to manage mail distribution right now. But you can legally copy Moonscape from anyone who has downloaded it, and if you feel uneasy about getting it for free, you can still send a donation.

Will it deal with the so-called "moon hoax" theory? No. Simply viewing this footage, in its original quality, should be enough to dispel any fakery theories from the mind of any sane person. Moonscape is meant to celebrate courage and ingenuity, not to debunk doubters and lunatics.

Will it be possible to see Moonscape grow? Yes. Low-resolution rough cuts will be published periodically to allow anyone to check and review the work and offer suggestions and criticism.

How long will the fundraising last? Indefinitely. We will be updating Moonscape as newly restored material becomes available to buy. Also, if this first documentary is successful, we'll be making similar videos for all the other Moon missions.

How's the fundraising going? So far, quite well: we've got enough funds to buy nearly all the currently available Apollo 11 footage HD transfers. But we still need funds for any future footage that might become available and for the documentaries that will cover the other Apollo missions. We'd like to get the astronauts themselves to do some commentary, too, and that might be costly. The details are available here .

How much money are you making out of this? None so far. Apart from being the proud owners of full, unedited HD transfers of the Moon landing footage, we're not making any profit out of this project. Actually, we've spent quite a lot to buy technical reference books and other reference material. If we do get any money from TV rights or the like, we'll reinvest it for future projects. We're in this for the pleasure of sharing an incredible moment of history, not for the money.

Is this project sponsored by NASA? No. A few people who work(ed) at NASA are giving us a hand informally with the technical reference and fact-checking, but we're not funded in any way by NASA or any other agency.

I represent a TV station. Can I broadcast Moonscape ? Yes, provided that you broadcast it in full, make a reasonable donation and don't slap any copyright restrictions on the documentary.

Perché hai scelto il Futura come font di Moonscape ? Perché è un bel font e perché è un doppio omaggio: a Stanley Kubrick, che lo usò in 2001: Odissea nello spazio , e alla NASA, che lo usò come font "ufficiale" per tutte le scritte presenti sui veicoli Apollo.

Stamattina ho ritirato, installato e configurato il computer dedicato esclusivamente alla produzione di Moonscape . È un iMac 27" con processore Intel i7 quad-core a 2,8 GHz, 8 GB di RAM e un disco da 1 TB (più tre dischi 1 TB external one and an encoder Elgato ).
